About

mom3 Hi I am a mother of 3 married to a great guy and we are trying to live a more conscious life style. This blog is to record my adventures in living local in Santa Fe, NM. I hope to bring you information about eating local and resources for those of you living in or near Santa Fe. My husband and I are also venturing into a eco business. We are starting a gelato company here in Santa Fe. You can read about those adventures at ogelato.us and you can learn about organic living at modernorganicmama.com.

With a family of five I have a budget that I need to keep so not I not only want to buy local but I also want to stretch my dollar. So I will be be blogging about cost as well as ways to stretch your money and save time. Hopefully it will be a great experience for us and you are welcome to join along.

The general rules I have for myself is to try to get as much of my food from local sources as possible. This means that I will be cooking a lot from scratch. To me local means that it was made locally with local ingredients. There are some pre-made things that are labeled local in my coop that are made locally but not with local ingredients. To me this isn’t really local and takes a second seat to other local things but I would buy these over a non-locally made food. This is probably clear as mud but I’m trying.

Oh! I forgot, one more thing. When do you think it will be safe to plant my tomato plants in the ground? I have about 40 of them in pots in my guest room and they are now about two feet tall so I’m getting a little anxious.

I would recommend waiting until after May 15th. May 15th is the average last frost date for here. Also try planting the tomatoes next to a south facing wall to help keep them warm at night. The hardest thing about growing tomatoes here is that the night time temperatures can get cold and toms need warn night temps to ripen.
You can plant out greens now like plants from the cabbage family. Seeds to plant out now would be carrots, peas, radishes, lettus or onion. Best of luck.
